The Hippy Market of Es Canar is located on the premises of a famous tourist destination (a resort catering to the young generation). It all began as in 1973 the resort management thought it would be a nice idea to give the local hippies a chance to peddle their goods to a small resident population of tourists spending a few days on holiday in Club Punta Arabí. From the initial 6 stands in 1973, Maggie selling her wonderful cakes , a lady coming from Formentera to sell her warm woolly sweaters, some guy selling puppies, another person selling indian jewelry and children swapping toys to the rhythm of violins, guitars and jam sessions; the “mercadillo” has developed into a full fledged life-support-system for many families and businesses on the island.
