Armstrong tells for the first time the fascinating history of this fantasy island. It is a story of invasions and migrations, of artists and conmen, of drop outs and love-ins. This narrative is framed by Stephen’s highly entertaining experiences during one long, golden summer on Ibiza, an island where anything can happen – and it usually does.
Armstrong’s incredibly likable, unobtrusive presence, his slightly hopeless attempts at casting off his reserve and joining the party, his genuine interest in the native and adopted islanders, make this the most delightful and entertaining travel book you could hope to read this summer.

The idea is to reflect the different cultures and civilisations which have shaped the face of Ibiza as we know it today – Arabs, Jews, Christians will all be represented there.
The festival has grown over the years and now gathers 120,000 people visiting it, shopping for special handicraft and to assist to the numerous free shows.

Since 1975 Ibiza has been something of a bolt-hole for the well-known fashion and advertising photographer Chico Bialas. Over many years Bialas has been nurturing the idea of paying homage to this, his favourite corner of the world, granting the island some of the space which it in turn had set aside for him.
Bialas’ photos are focused on the spirit behind a simple gesture, on objects whose function no longer exists. Space is passion.
Behind every image is the sense of the object`s inner essence of desire drunk to the full, seizing hold of transient yearning.

Following the success of Eivissa-Ibiza: a Hundred Years of Light and Shade (2000), its author continued searching for exceptional photographs of Ibiza and Formentera in half a dozen countries, and has located fifty more archives containing first-class material. The book contains several overlapping themes, but the principal subject is undoubtedly Ibicenco culture, above all traditions, crafts and activities which have rarely been captured on film. A second theme is the 1955-80 transition to an economy based on tourism, a time during which the old and the new (beatniks/hippies) created arresting juxtapositions. A third theme is the rich variety of Ibiza’s cosmopolitan community (or communities), seen both in photographs and biographical entries: the photographers themselves represent thirteen different European and American countries. A fourth theme is the beauty of Ibiza’s landscapes and townscapes, and here early colour photographs play a special role. The final theme, time, is underlined by the book’s subtitle, with its different nuances in each language. Over the past half-century tourism, immigration, affluence and technology have combined to alter many of the things which once set Ibiza apart. Island Out of Time both celebrates what was unique about the island in the past, and presents a plea for sustainability with regard to our common future.

<img align="right" image700" src="http://www.ibizabound.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/04/hierbas.gif" alt="hierbas.gif" />This drink was made by Ibiza’s rural population more than 200 years ago. The process of elaboration was very rudimentary and each family had its own recipe, which consisted basically in the maceration of a handful of plants in the interior of a bottle or garafe of anise, so it was a drink for home consumption.
At the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th Century industrial manufacturers appear who collect and improve the recipe and processing of HIERBAS IBICENCAS. Thus references to it begin to appear in the press and gastronomic comments or publicity.
There are also literary references, such as in Vicente Blasco Ibañez’s work ‘Los muertos mandan’, in which the consumption of alcoholic drinks flavoured with aromatic plants, mainly growing wild, is decribed as an ancient custom of the island of Ibiza. Of course, there are constant references to Hierbas in tourist magazines and gastronomic guides to the Pityusas.
The distinctive flavour is a blend of the leaves, fruits and / or seeds of 18 plants, which at the very least are an excellent aid to digestion. Accompanying the herbs Rosemary and Thyme, are Juniper berries, Mountain Mint and of course Aniseed. The secret to producing Hierbas of consistently high quality is the special treatment of these ingredients, the extraction of only the purest of aromas from each of the plants. Only after each individual extract has been quality-controlled can the mixing process begin.

With more than 700 cultural and natural sites already protected worldwide, the World Heritage Committee of UNESCO is working to make sure that future generations can inherit the treasures of the past. The council has set aside €45000 to cover the cost of the three day extravaganza starting on Friday 12th May until Sunday 14th.
Last year over 100,000 turned up in the old centre of Eivissa called Dalt Vila to witness street performers and browse the 60 stalls selling traditional products.

<img align="left" image186" src="http://www.ibizabound.com/wp-content/uploads/2006/02/THE%20SMOKER.jpg" alt="THE SMOKER.jpg" height="156" width="137" />There are over 30 exhibitions of paintings, drawings, sculptures and photographs currently showing in galleries, museums and bars in Ibiza.
The biggest attraction of all is definitely the display of Picasso’s work at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Dalt Vila, which opened the 16th of September and running until the end of October. Two series of his drawings, produced when he was 80 years old, ‘The Smokers’ (see pict) and ‘Family Portraits’ have been lent to the museum by the Fundacin Bancaixa for public viewing.
